Our Process – The First Year Experience

The EXS Capital Advisory Process

At EXS Capital, our approach is to start every relationship with a discovery process – an in-depth dialogue to identify the issues most important to you.

This includes not only short-term and long-term goals and concerns, but also the structure of existing assets, business interests, and insurance, as well as your tolerance for risk.

We define risk to include exposure to estate and income taxes in all applicable jurisdictions.

Everyone’s experience is going to be different with EXS Capital; however, there are certain constants among clients and what we help them achieve.

Over the last 15 years of industry experience, we have condensed those experiences with thousands of clients into a process that allows high net worth expatriates to receive the bulk of their tailored advice over three steps.
Through years of constant and never ending improvements and recording those ever so slight changes, we have accumulated a vault of knowledge in problem solving for complex estates.

Unlike most financial services firms, we are not designed to flog unsuitable investment or insurance products to our clients. As “client-side” advisers, we sit on the same side of the table when it comes to discussing your goals and ambitions, both financial and non-financial.

The Three Step Delivery Process

Our success lies in the copious amount of due diligence we undertake with each client. Getting to know your entire estate and all the stakeholders allows us to provide wealth strategies with a deeper level of understanding. Most of our due diligence is conducted in the first and second step.

  • First Step: Prior to the physical meeting, we conduct the “Discovery Session”. By sending you our carefully designed “Confidential Client Discovery Questionnaire” and “Investor Risk Profile” in advance we get to learn a lot about how we can help you. These tools are central to understanding you and your estate. They allow us to formulate most of our advice and enable us to further refine your strategy as we discuss options with you. In the first step we provide all our advice in a whiteboard session that discusses both our strategy and tactics for designing your wealth. After the step we will send you an “Engagement Pack” which provides an executive summary of our advice in advance as well as all our fees upfront.
  • Second Step: When we have agreement with you, we request you send us all the required documents outlined in our “Next Steps Checklist”. After we receive those documents we start to build the blueprint to your estate. Piecing all the documents, assets and liabilities together until your jigsaw of information becomes a complete picture. In the second step we shall have ready your personalized “Wealth Strategy”. This manifesto provides a step-by-step guide of what we intend to do for your estate, covering your entire estate from cash-flow, tax structuring, portfolio design, property investment, finance, insurance programs and estate plan. This organizer stores all your most important legal documents and strategies for your estate. It is the touchstone between yourself and EXS Capital and the instruction manual for your family for estate planning purposes.

The EXS Capital Advisory Process utilizes both in-house and external specialists to optimize your estate by strategically walking you through the four main plans in your estate.
All four plans work in the following order:
    1. The Tax Structure Plan
    2. The Will & Estate Plan
    3. The Insurance Plan
    4. The Investment Plan

As we complete each plan over time we add them to the EXS Capital Personal Financial Organizer. EXS Capital retains all documents electronically for contingency planning.

  • Third Step: This session is the implementation of your “Wealth Strategy” and a further display of our advice via the four plans of your advisory process that include The Tax Structure Plan, The Will & Estate Plan, The Insurance Plan and The Investment Plan.

After the first 3 months

Most of the heavy lifting is done in the first three months of your steps with EXS Capital.

Once done, your vision of your estate and how to move forward in building your wealth will be clear and your understanding of the tax issues, risks and challenges ahead will be deeper.

Our advice is extremely flexible and adaptable to change so we are constantly reviewing your estate in light of these possibilities.

The rest of the year is a continuous stream of information that aims to snowball the education we look to provide. Armed with new knowledge, we find that better informed clients are able to work faster on building their estates and make better investment decisions. Taking the extra time and effort in the early stages of our process brings both the clients expectations and the advisors advice into alignment.

Ongoing

After our advice has been absorbed into the estate we continue to manage our relationship with you through a number of channels:

  1. Newsletter – “EXS Monthly Insights” is our company e-newsletter that is exclusive to our clients. Our investment committee meets monthly to discuss the global investment environment and provides those insights, videos and research to our clients via email
  2. Seminars/Webinars – We shall conduct private and public forums for discussion for more topical issues that require deeper explanation and research
  3. Private client functions – By way of invitation only, you will be invited to our own company parties, functions and events
  4. 24×7 portfolio access – Your portfolios will be online at all times using our independent third party platforms
  5. Quarterly reviews – Your online portfolios are reviewed monthly with our investment committee meetings; however, one month to the next is too short a timeframe to monitor change. This is why we look at portfolio reviews each quarter for asset allocation and weighting realignment
  6. Annual reviews – Strategically we review your entire estate every year to concentrate on the big picture

“We were looking for an advisor that was not there to “push product” but to quickly assess our expat-oriented financial and estate planning needs and provide concise, tailored recommendations. We also wanted someone who had done all the research and found the best available products and advisors in the market. Todd hit the mark. He has really impressed us with his enthusiastic yet down to earth manner combined with a clear depth of knowledge of estate planning. Most importantly, you feel he sincerely has your best interests at heart.” James Kruger & Lingyin Tang
